1st Samuel – True Faith Obeys

Our lesson for the tenth of July is entitled True Faith Obeys and is taken from 1 Samuel 13:14 (only one verse!), with references to the past chapters regarding Saul’s life and work, and references to a number of other passages throughout the Bible. We will make four discoveries about obedience and then a discovery about ‘attending upon God,’ each of which are among the marks of true faith. This is, in reality, a continuation of last week’s sermon on pretend faith.

Our public reading was the classic Psalm 1

1 Samuel 13:14

14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.” (ESV)

Psalm 1

1:1 Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish. (ESV)
